Mornington, Vic, ML 4.5

(September 2, 18:22 UTC)

This earthquake was felt widely over the Mornington Peninsula, with highest reported intensities approaching MMI 6 about Mornington. No damage was reported.

The earthquake was probably on the Selwyn Fault, a major reverse fault that has thrust Mornington Peninsula up and Port Phillip Bay down, and dips to the southeast under the Peninsula. This fault has been active for millions of years (since mid-Miocene), and has a total accumulated vertical displacement of almost one kilometre.

An isoseismal map was prepared by Holmes, 1933. A summary and a copy of the isoseismal map are given in Atlas 1.
