This earthquake was in Bass Strait about 50 km southeast of Lorne, 50 km southwest of Cape Schanck, and 70 km south of Geelong. It was felt by many people in and to the south of Geelong, and north to Lara and Bannockburn. There have been no reports of it being felt in Melbourne. There was an aftershock of magnitude ML 1.6 at 11:52 am EDST, and another of magnitude ML 2.0 at 01:28 pm. This area experienced two earthquakes of magnitude ML 5.0 and 5.7 on 1965 September 14, and one of magnitude ML 5.3 on 1981 June 17.

Although residents of Darwin often feel large distant earthquakes from the Banda Sea, small local events are comparatively rare. The last felt local earthquake near Darwin was of magnitude ML 3.9 on 1999 November 12.

This earthquake occurred just west of Boolarra in Gippsland, about 22 km Southwest of Morwell and 130 km Southeast of Melbourne. It was felt strongly in Gippsland, and there have been unconfirmed reports of minor damage. It was felt over all Melbourne suburbs, particularly in the east, but as far west as Sunshine. A foreshock of magnitude ML 2.6 was recorded at 09:20 pm AEDT, about two hours before the main shock, and there was an ML 1.5 foreshock at 10:40 am AEDT. There were no significant aftershocks in the three weeks after the main shock. The SRC is installing additional temporary seismographs in the epicentral area to record possible aftershocks.

A number of small events have occurred in the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne, in an area near the Epping earthquakes of 2000 February 15 and 1999 August 19. The first of these events was reported felt, which is unusual for an earthquake of this small magnitude. However, small, shallow earthquakes can be felt within a few kilometres of the epicentre. Although the local origin times of these events seem to correspond to normal blasting patterns, no quarries in the area have detonated blasts at these times, and the lack of surface waves suggests that they are in fact earthquakes. As earthquakes tend to cluster in time and space, there is an increased likelihood of further earthquakes in this area in the near future.
